The need for clean, renewable energy is a global issue that strikes at many levels: reducing air pollution, preventing the accumulation of CO2 and other greenhouse gases that cause climate change, and conserving our planet’s limited resources.
I’ve witnessed the problems of fossil fuels firsthand. Growing up in urban Nagoya, one of Japan’s largest industrialized areas, air pollution caused me to suffer from asthma. Having also spent time living and working in the large cities of Indonesia and most recently, Vietnam, I’ve seen how the rise in population, traffic, and industry has taken its toll on the air quality there too.
Countries in Southeast Asia lie at a crossroads. As they strive for increased electrification to support booming populations, they also have a unique opportunity to choose renewable energy instead of creating more infrastructure around fossil fuels.
Fortunately, Vietnam in particular has already been pushing ahead with renewable energy projects. The government’s National Power Development Master Plan has set forth ambitious plans to increase the share of renewable energy, hoping to have 186 billion kWh of the nation’s electricity output produced from renewable sources by 2030.
I’m proud of the role that Mix Energy has already played in helping Vietnam meet its targets and we’ll continue to develop further renewable energy projects in our pipeline there. At the same time, we’re looking beyond to other countries in Asia as we strive towards achieving 1,000 MW in combined solar and wind power generation by 2025.
